Composition of Gliclan M Tablet

Gliclan M Tablet contains Gliclazide (80mg) + Metformin (500mg). It belongs to the Sulfonylurea + Biguanide class of medicines.

How Gliclan M Tablet works

Gliclazide is a sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, lowering blood glucose. Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, increasing peripheral glucose uptake. Together they provide better glycaemic control than either alone.

How to take Gliclan M Tablet

Take orally as prescribed by the doctor, usually with or immediately after meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow tablets whole with water; do not crush/chew unless advised. Maintain diet/exercise plan and monitor blood glucose regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Gliclan M 80mg/500mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and prolonged low blood sugar, which may lead to fits or unconsciousness. It can cause a dangerous build-up of acid in the blood, with vomiting, severe weakness and laboured breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Gliclan M Tablet

Most side effects of Gliclan M are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• loss of appetite
• metallic taste
• hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
• dizziness
• headache
• weight gain
• skin rash

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of hypoglycaemia (especially with missed meals, excess exercise, alcohol, or other antidiabetics); carry a quick source of sugar. Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk higher in kidney/liver impairment, dehydration, severe infection, heart failure, or heavy alcohol use. Avoid/use with caution in renal impairment; kidney function monitoring is required. Stop temporarily before/after major surgery and around iodinated contrast procedures as advised by doctor. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Do not take Gliclan M if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or an acute illness causing dehydration. Not for people who have had diabetic ketoacidosis.

Interactions with other medicines

Other antidiabetic drugs/insulin (increased hypoglycaemia risk), alcohol (hypoglycaemia/lactic acidosis risk), ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (raise blood glucose), rifampicin (may reduce gliclazide effect), azole antifungals/macrolides/fluoroquinolones (may increase hypoglycaemia), iodinated contrast media (lactic acidosis risk with metformin), cimetidine (increases metformin levels)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine. It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal. Inform your doctor about your diabetes treatment if you are due to have surgery under a general anesthetic. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any deep or rapid breathing or if you have persistent nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain as Gliclan M 80mg/500mg Tablet may cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, which is an excess of lactic acid in the blood. Your doctor may check your liver function regularly. Inform your doctor if you develop symptoms such as abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).
