How Lethyrox 25 works

LETHYrox 25 Tablet is a synthetic version of a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It works by replacing the thyroid hormones that your thyroid gland cannot produce in a sufficient quantity, and relieves the symptoms of hypothyroidism (tiredness, weight gain, and depression).

How to take Lethyrox 25

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. LETHYrox 25 Tablet is to be taken on an empty stomach.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of LETHYrox 25 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a racing heart, chest pain, tremor, fever and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Lethyrox are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Take it on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, with water, and wait at least half an hour to an hour before eating or drinking anything else. Food, tea and coffee substantially reduce how much is absorbed. Separate it by at least four hours from calcium, iron, antacids and multivitamins — these bind it and block absorption. This is usually lifelong treatment. Do not stop when your reports come back normal; the normal report is the medicine working. Report palpitations, tremor, marked weight loss or difficulty sleeping — these suggest the dose is too high. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant; the requirement usually rises and needs prompt adjustment.

Do not take Lethyrox if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with an untreated overactive thyroid or untreated adrenal insufficiency.

Interactions with other medicines

Calcium, iron, antacids, multivitamins and some cholesterol medicines block absorption — separate them by four hours. Tell your doctor if you take a blood thinner or diabetes medicine; doses may need review.

LETHYrox 25 Tablet should be taken on an empty stomach (ideally, first thing in the morning). No food, milk, or tea should be taken 1 hour before and 2 hours after taking this medicine. It may take 6 to 8 weeks to get the full effect. For most people, LETHYrox 25 Tablet can be a lifelong medication. Do not discontinue it without discussing your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have diarrhea, nervousness, irritability, sleep disturbances, shaking hands, or chest pain. Your doctor may adjust your dose. Leave a gap of at least 4 hours before taking any antacids, calcium or iron supplements, and multivitamins, as these may interfere with the effect of the medicine. Get your hormone levels checked regularly and inform your doctor if you notice a significant change in your body weight. The dose may need to be adjusted. Inform your doctor before changing the brand of LETHYrox 25 Tablet as all brands may not have the same effect.
