Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Lotel Eye Ointment contains Loteprednol etabonate (5mg).
Redness and swelling in the eye
Lotel Eye Ointment is a steroid which blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that make the eye red, swollen and itchy.
This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the tube close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the tube and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
If you miss a dose of Lotel Eye Ointment, use it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.
Taking more Lotel than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Lotel are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every medicine you take, including over-the-counter products, vitamins and herbal or ayurvedic preparations, before starting Lotel. Some combinations can change how Lotel works or raise the chance of side effects.
Store Lotel below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the pack tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date printed on the pack.
Your doctor has prescribed Lotel Eye Ointment to treat redness and swelling (inflammation) of the eye. Do not use Lotel Eye Ointment for more than the prescribed duration as it may cause glaucoma or secondary infection. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, or to your eye, to avoid contaminating the eye drops. Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute immediately after instilling the drop. Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution. Stinging sensation may occur for 1-2 mins. Notify your doctor if it persists for longer. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before putting in these eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting your lenses back in. Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle. Do not stop taking Lotel Eye Ointment suddenly without talking to your doctor first as it may worsen your symptoms.
