Piolit 15 mg Tablet contains Pioglitazone 15 mg. It belongs to the Thiazolidinedione (PPAR-gamma agonist) class of medicines.

Uses of Piolit 15 mg Tablet

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to improve blood sugar control) as monotherapy or add-on therapy with other antidiabetic medicines along with diet and exercise.

How Piolit 15 mg Tablet works

Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione that activates PPAR-gamma receptors, improving insulin sensitivity in muscle and adipose tissue and reducing hepatic glucose output. This lowers blood glucose and improves glycaemic control over time.

How to take Piolit 15 mg Tablet

Take by mouth as advised by the doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water; continue diet/exercise plan and monitor blood glucose regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine may cause low blood sugar and marked stomach upset. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Piolit are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• muscle pain
• low blood sugar (when used with insulin/sulfonylureas)

Warnings and precautions

Not recommended in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Can cause or worsen heart failure—avoid in NYHA class III/IV and use caution in patients with fluid retention; seek help for rapid weight gain, swelling, shortness of breath. Monitor liver function; stop and consult doctor if jaundice or dark urine occurs. May increase risk of fractures (especially in women). Rare risk of macular edema—report vision changes. Use cautiously in elderly and those with heart disease; dose adjustment of concomitant insulin/sulfonylurea may be needed to reduce hypoglycaemia.

Do not take Piolit if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with heart failure, active bladder cancer or unexplained blood in the urine.

Interactions with other medicines

Insulin (increased risk of edema/heart failure), sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycaemia risk), gemfibrozil (may increase pioglitazone levels), rifampicin (may reduce pioglitazone effect), oral contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol/norethindrone (may reduce hormone levels), other hepatotoxic drugs (additive liver risk).

How to store Piolit 15 mg Tablet

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Take it with the first mouthful of your meal so it can act on that meal. Expect some wind in the first weeks; it usually settles.
