Satrogyl O Dry Syrup contains Satranidazole (75mg/5ml) + Ofloxacin (50mg/5ml). It belongs to the Fluoroquinolone antibiotic + Nitroimidazole derivative class of medicines.

Uses of Satrogyl O Dry Syrup

• Treatment of acute infectious diarrhoea and dysentery due to mixed bacterial and protozoal infections; gastroenteritis/intestinal infections where both anaerobic/protozoal and bacterial cover is required

How Satrogyl O Dry Syrup works

Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase/topoisomerase IV, stopping bacterial replication. Satranidazole is a nitroimidazole anti-infective active against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa by generating reactive intermediates that damage DNA, leading to cell death.

How to take Satrogyl O Dry Syrup

Oral dry syrup: reconstitute with boiled and cooled water up to the mark, shake well, and use the measuring cup/spoon. Give the dose exactly as prescribed; usually taken after food to reduce stomach upset. Shake well before each dose; complete the full course even if symptoms improve.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. It can cause kidney injury, fits and heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Satrogyl O Dry are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Prescription-only; do not use for viral diarrhoea. Use with caution in liver disease, kidney impairment, history of seizures/CNS disorders, heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation), myasthenia gravis, and in elderly. Risk of tendinitis/tendon rupture and peripheral neuropathy with ofloxacin—stop and seek medical advice if tendon pain, numbness/tingling, or weakness occurs. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Maintain hydration; seek urgent care for severe diarrhoea, blood in stools, high fever, or symptoms of allergy.

Do not take Satrogyl O Dry if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Generally avoided in children and adolescents, in pregnancy, and in anyone with a history of tendon problems with these antibiotics.

Interactions with other medicines

Antacids or supplements containing magnesium/aluminium/calcium/iron/zinc and sucralfate reduce ofloxacin absorption (separate by 2–4 hours); warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk); corticosteroids (increased tendon rupture risk); antiarrhythmics/other QT-prolonging drugs; NSAIDs (may increase seizure risk); antidiabetic medicines/insulin (may affect blood glucose); alcohol (may worsen side effects).

How to store Satrogyl O Dry Syrup

Store dry powder in a cool, dry place below 25°C, protected from moisture and light. After reconstitution, keep tightly closed; store as directed on label (often in a refrigerator or at room temperature) and use within the recommended period; do not freeze.

Expert advice for Satrogyl O Dry Syrup

Your child may have an altered taste or furry tongue (coating of Satrogyl-O Dry Syrup on tongue) after taking Satrogyl-O Dry Syrup. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help. Do not give any calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin, or antacid within 2 hours of taking Satrogyl-O Dry Syrup as these can affect the absorption of the medicine. Conditions like common cold and flu are caused by viruses. Never use this medicine for such conditions. Quit giving Satrogyl-O Dry Syrup and speak to the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing. Only give Satrogyl-O Dry Syrup to your child for their current infection. Never save medicine for future illnesses.
