Spiromide contains Furosemide (20mg) + Spironolactone (50mg). It belongs to the Water tablet and Potassium-sparing diuretic class of medicines.

How Spiromide works

Spiromide Tablet contains two medicines: furosemide and spironolactone, which act on different parts of the kidney to remove excess fluid. Furosemide is a short-acting loop diuretic that helps the kidneys eliminate sodium, chloride, and water through urine, thereby reducing fluid overload and blood pressure. Spironolactone is a long-acting aldosterone antagonist that promotes the excretion of sodium and water while conserving potassium, helping maintain electrolyte balance and preventing potassium loss during treatment.

How to take Spiromide

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Spiromide Tablet should be taken with or after food. Avoid Spiromide Tablet with dietary sodium.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Spiromide Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe dehydration, a sharp fall in blood pressure and dangerous salt imbalances. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Spiromide

Most side effects of Spiromide are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Take it in the morning so that passing urine does not disturb your sleep. Your doctor will check your salts and kidney function with blood tests — do not skip them. Report muscle cramps, marked weakness, confusion or an irregular heartbeat; these can be signs your potassium or sodium has fallen. In hot weather or during an illness with vomiting or loose motions, tell your doctor — you may become dehydrated quickly. This water tablet KEEPS potassium rather than losing it. Do not take potassium supplements or potassium-based salt substitutes with it unless your doctor has specifically told you to. Report muscle weakness, numbness or an irregular heartbeat — these can be signs potassium has risen too high. Breast tenderness or enlargement can occur in men; tell your doctor if it troubles you.

Do not take Spiromide if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people who are unable to pass urine, or who are severely dehydrated.

Interactions with other medicines

Anti-inflammatory painkillers blunt the effect and can strain the kidneys. Lithium and digoxin levels are affected; tell your doctor if you take either. Potassium-sparing types must not be combined with potassium supplements without supervision.

Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Spiromide Tablet helps remove excess water from your body. Take it in the morning with breakfast to avoid getting up at night to urinate. It may cause dizziness or sleepiness. Don't drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you. To lower the chance of feeling dizzy or passing out, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down. It may cause excessive urine production, dehydration, and low electrolyte levels. Notify your doctor if you experience dizziness, tiredness, or muscle weakness that doesn't go away. Your doctor may regularly monitor your blood pressure, kidney function, and the level of salts such as potassium and sodium in your blood while you're taking this medication.
