How Thyronorm 12.5 mcg works

Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), the natural thyroid hormone. It is converted to the active hormone (T3) in the body and helps normalize metabolism, energy levels, and TSH levels in hypothyroidism.

How to take Thyronorm 12.5 mcg

Take orally once daily exactly as prescribed. Usually taken on an empty stomach with water, preferably in the morning 30–60 minutes before breakfast; take at the same time each day. Avoid taking with calcium/iron/antacids or high-fibre/soy meals—separate by at least 4 hours. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice; periodic TSH monitoring is needed.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a racing heart, chest pain, tremor, fever and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Warnings and precautions

Not for weight loss/obesity treatment. Overdose or excessive dosing can cause hyperthyroid symptoms and serious heart problems. Use caution in elderly patients and those with coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, or adrenal insufficiency (treat adrenal insufficiency first). Dose adjustments may be needed in pregnancy, after delivery, with major weight changes, or when starting/stopping interacting medicines; monitor TSH/T4. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe palpitations, shortness of breath, or fainting.

Do not take Thyronorm if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with an untreated overactive thyroid or untreated adrenal insufficiency.

Interactions with other medicines

Calcium salts,iron salts,aluminium/magnesium antacids,sucralfate,cholestyramine/colestipol,sevelamer (reduced absorption); rifampicin,carbamazepine,phenytoin,phenobarbital (reduced effect); warfarin (increased anticoagulant effect); insulin/oral antidiabetics (dose adjustment may be needed); oestrogens/combined OCs (may increase requirement); amiodarone (thyroid dysfunction); propranolol (affects T4 to T3 conversion)

How to store Thyronorm 12.5 mcg

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep in original container/blister; keep out of reach of children.
