Composition of Thyrox 25 Tablet

Thyrox 25 Tablet contains Levothyroxine sodium 25 mcg (equivalent to Levothyroxine 25 mcg). It belongs to the Thyroid hormone (synthetic T4) class of medicines.

How Thyrox 25 Tablet works

Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), a natural thyroid hormone. It is converted to the active hormone T3 in tissues and restores normal levels of thyroid hormone, helping regulate metabolism, energy, and growth.

How to take Thyrox 25 Tablet

Take orally once daily exactly as prescribed, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach 30–60 minutes before breakfast with water. Take at the same time daily. Avoid taking with calcium/iron/antacids; keep a gap of at least 4 hours. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice; dose is adjusted based on TSH/T4 tests.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a racing heart, chest pain, tremor, fever and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Thyrox 25 Tablet

Most side effects of Thyrox are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Palpitations
• fast heartbeat
• anxiety
• irritability
• insomnia
• headache
• tremor
• sweating
• heat intolerance
• weight loss
• diarrhoea
• nausea
• menstrual irregularities
• temporary hair loss (initially)

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Not for weight loss/obesity treatment; high doses can cause serious heart problems. Use with caution in heart disease (angina, arrhythmias), hypertension, elderly, osteoporosis, diabetes, and adrenal/pituitary insufficiency (ensure adrenal function treated before starting). Monitor TSH/T4 regularly; symptoms of overdose include chest pain, palpitations, nervousness, and excessive sweating—seek medical help. Contains narrow therapeutic index—do not interchange brands/doses without doctor’s advice.

Do not take Thyrox if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with an untreated overactive thyroid or untreated adrenal insufficiency.

Interactions with other medicines

Reduced absorption with iron salts,calcium carbonate,aluminium/magnesium antacids,sucralfate,cholestyramine/colestipol,sevelamer,orlistat,soy/high-fibre diets; increased effect of warfarin; may increase insulin/oral antidiabetic requirements; interactions with rifampicin,carbamazepine,phenytoin,phenobarbital (increase metabolism),sertraline,amiodarone; timing interaction with proton pump inhibitors and coffee (may reduce absorption)

How to store Thyrox 25 Tablet

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Thyrox 25 Tablet

Keep to the same brand where you can, and take it at the same time every morning. Have your thyroid blood test repeated as your doctor advises after any dose change.
