Composition of Tresiba Penfill

Tresiba Penfill contains Insulin degludec 100 IU/mL solution for injection (3 mL cartridge). It belongs to the Long-acting (ultra-long) insulin analogue (basal insulin) class of medicines.

How Tresiba Penfill works

Insulin degludec is an ultra‑long acting basal insulin analogue. After subcutaneous injection it forms multi-hexamers that slowly release insulin, providing a stable, prolonged glucose-lowering effect for more than 24 hours.

How to take Tresiba Penfill

For subcutaneous use only in a compatible insulin pen using Penfill cartridges. Inject once daily at the same time each day or, if needed, with flexible timing as advised by the doctor. Can be taken with or without food; rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm). Do not mix with other insulins in the same syringe/cartridge; not for IV use.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Contact your doctor or diabetes nurse for advice — do not take a double dose to make up for a missed injection.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe low blood sugar, leading to fits or unconsciousness — this is a medical emergency. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Tresiba Penfill

Most side effects of Tresiba Penfill are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Hypoglycaemia
• injection site reactions (pain/redness/swelling)
• weight gain
• oedema
• lipodystrophy (lipoatrophy/lipohypertrophy)
• rash
• pruritus

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of hypoglycaemia (may impair driving/operating machinery); dose adjustments needed with changes in diet/exercise, intercurrent illness, renal/hepatic impairment. Do not use during episodes of hypoglycaemia. Avoid medication errors (confirm insulin name/strength); do not share pens/needles. Monitor for allergic reactions and injection-site lipodystrophy; rotate sites. Use with caution when switching from other insulins—requires close glucose monitoring.

Do not take Tresiba Penfill if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not to be used during an episode of low blood sugar.

Interactions with other medicines

Other antidiabetics (sulfonylureas, glinides) increase hypoglycaemia risk; beta-blockers may mask hypoglycaemia; corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics and danazol may increase glucose and insulin needs; ACE inhibitors, MAO inhibitors, salicylates and alcohol may enhance hypoglycaemic effect; pioglitazone with insulin may increase risk of fluid retention/heart failure.

How to store Tresiba Penfill

Unopened: store refrigerated at 2–8°C, do not freeze; keep away from freezer compartment. In-use: may be kept at room temperature (generally below 30°C) or refrigerated as per label; protect from heat and direct light; keep cartridge in carton; discard if frozen or if solution is not clear/colorless.

Expert advice for Tresiba Penfill

Keep an unopened supply in the fridge and the pen in use at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Always carry a fast-acting sugar source. Check your sugar as your doctor has instructed, and keep a record to take to appointments.
