Composition of Wokadine Ointment

Wokadine Ointment contains Metronidazole (1% w/w) + Povidone Iodine (5% w/w). It belongs to the Iodophor (iodine-releasing topical antiseptic) class of medicines.

How Wokadine Ointment works

Povidone-iodine slowly releases free iodine on the skin. Iodine rapidly kills a broad range of bacteria, fungi, viruses and some protozoa by oxidizing and iodinating cellular components.

How to take Wokadine Ointment

For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, apply a thin layer 1-2 times daily or as directed by a doctor; may be covered with sterile gauze. Avoid contact with eyes; wash hands after use.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Wokadine M Cream, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. It is unlikely from skin use, but swallowing an antiseptic is dangerous and needs immediate medical attention. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Wokadine Ointment

Most side effects of Wokadine are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Do not use if allergic to iodine/povidone-iodine. Avoid use on large areas, deep puncture wounds or severe burns unless advised by a doctor. Prolonged/excessive use or application on large wounds may affect thyroid function—use caution in thyroid disease, infants/young children, and during pregnancy/lactation. Stop use and seek medical advice if irritation, swelling or worsening occurs. Not for internal use; avoid eyes, mouth and genital mucosa.

Do not take Wokadine if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for use on large burns or deep wounds without medical advice.

Interactions with other medicines

May interfere with thyroid function tests and radioiodine scans/therapy. Increased risk of systemic iodine absorption with extensive use; caution with lithium (risk of hypothyroidism/goitre). Reduced activity when used with other topical antiseptics (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, silver compounds, chlorhexidine, mercurials).

How to store Wokadine Ointment

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep cap tightly closed and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Wokadine Ointment

Clean the wound and then apply the cream to the affected area using a sterile gloved hand or a sterile spatula. Apply it once or twice daily and reapply to any areas from which it gets removed due to activity. Burn areas should be covered with the cream at all times. It may cause minor burning, stinging, or irritation when applied. Inform your doctor if this does not go away. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth. Rinse it off with water if you accidentally get the cream in these areas.
