Tablet
Hypertension, angina pectoris, prevention of migraine, control of tachyarrhythmias (fast heart rate), essential tremor, anxiety-related palpitations; adjunct in thyrotoxicosis
Propranolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and contractility and suppresses sympathetic activity, lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand. It also helps prevent migraine by stabilizing vascular and neuronal excitability.
Take by mouth as prescribed by the doctor, usually 1–2 times daily. Can be taken with or without food but take at the same time each day; do not stop suddenly. Swallow the tablet with water; dose may be adjusted based on response and pulse/BP.
Bradycardia, fatigue, dizziness, cold hands/feet, nausea, diarrhea, sleep disturbances/vivid dreams, low blood pressure
Do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound angina/arrhythmia). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may cause bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask hypoglycemia symptoms), peripheral vascular disease, heart failure, AV block, and liver impairment. Monitor pulse and blood pressure; seek medical help for wheezing, severe dizziness, fainting, or very slow pulse.
Verapamil, diltiazem (risk of severe bradycardia/heart block), digoxin, amiodarone, other antihypertensives, clonidine (withdrawal effects), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), CYP inhibitors like cimetidine/fluoxetine (increase propranolol levels), CYP inducers like rifampicin (decrease levels)
