Treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic heart failure (as adjunct therapy), and left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction (to reduce cardiovascular risk).
How It Works
Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with additional alpha-1 blocking activity. It lowers heart rate and reduces the force of contraction, and also relaxes blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure and workload on the heart.
Directions for Use
Tablet to be taken orally as prescribed. Usually taken with food to reduce the risk of dizziness/low blood pressure; take at the same time each day. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Side Effects
dizziness, fatigue, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, weight gain, shortness of breath, swelling (oedema)
Warnings & Precautions
May cause dizziness and low blood pressure especially after the first dose or dose increases—rise slowly from sitting/lying. Do not discontinue abruptly (risk of worsening angina/heart failure). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may worsen bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask low blood sugar symptoms), thyroid disorders, severe peripheral vascular disease, liver impairment, and in patients with bradycardia or heart block. Monitor blood pressure, pulse, and in heart failure monitor weight/edema. Not for use in cardiogenic shock, severe bradycardia, 2nd/3rd degree heart block (unless paced), severe hypotension, severe liver disease, or decompensated heart failure unless directed by a specialist.
