Esam 5 mg Tablet is a prescription medicine containing Amlodipine 5 mg (as amlodipine besylate) tablet. It is used for hypertension (high blood pressure), treatment of chronic stable angina and vasospastic (Prinzmetal) angina. It belongs to the group of medicines called Calcium channel blocker (dihydropyridine).
Take orally as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Esam 5 mg Tablet are ankle/leg swelling (edema), headache, dizziness and flushing. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Esam 5 mg Tablet works.
Most side effects of Esam are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Take orally as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels by inhibiting calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the workload on the heart, improving blood flow and relieving angina.
Use with caution in liver disease (may require dose adjustment). May cause dizziness or low blood pressure—use caution while driving or standing up quickly. In patients with severe aortic stenosis or heart failure, use only under medical supervision. Do not discontinue without consulting your doctor; monitor blood pressure regularly.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.
An overdose of this medicine can cause a severe fall in blood pressure and a dangerously slow or irregular heartbeat. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), simvastatin (limit simvastatin dose; increased levels), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, ketoconazole, ritonavir) may increase amlodipine levels, CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine) may reduce effect, grapefruit juice (may increase levels in some patients)
