Ethinylestradiol 0.03 mg + Levonorgestrel 0.15 mg
Oral contraception (prevention of pregnancy); may also help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce menstrual pain/bleeding as advised by a doctor
This combined oral contraceptive prevents ovulation by suppressing pituitary gonadotropins. It also thickens cervical mucus to reduce sperm penetration and alters the endometrium, making implantation less likely.
Tablet (oral). Take 1 tablet daily at the same time for 21 days, followed by a 7-day tablet-free interval (or as prescribed). Start as advised (often Day 1 of menstrual cycle); if starting later, use backup contraception for 7 days. Can be taken with or without food; if vomiting/diarrhoea occurs soon after dosing, follow missed-pill advice and use backup contraception.
Nausea, vomiting, headache, breast tenderness, abdominal pain, bloating, mood changes, spotting/breakthrough bleeding, missed periods, weight change, acne, dizziness
Prescription-only (Schedule H). Not for use in pregnancy; stop and consult doctor if pregnancy suspected. Increased risk of blood clots (DVT/PE), stroke and heart attack—risk higher in smokers (especially >35 years), obesity, prolonged immobilization, surgery, personal/family history of thrombosis. Avoid/use with caution in uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes with vascular disease, migraine with aura, severe liver disease/jaundice, liver tumors, hormone-dependent cancers (breast/endometrium), unexplained vaginal bleeding. Stop before major surgery/immobilization as advised. Does not protect against HIV/STIs. Seek urgent care for chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, vision changes, leg swelling/pain.
Rifampicin/rifabutin, certain anti-epileptics (phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, primidone, topiramate), some antiretrovirals, griseofulvin, St John’s wort (reduced contraceptive effect); lamotrigine (reduced lamotrigine levels); cyclosporine (levels may increase); some antibiotics may affect efficacy if causing vomiting/diarrhoea—use backup method
