Used to lower high cholesterol and triglycerides (dyslipidemia) and to reduce risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in at-risk patients.

Atorvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This lowers LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides and can modestly increase HDL (“good” cholesterol).

Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food; take at the same time each day. Continue diet/exercise measures; do not stop without medical advice.

Headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), fatigue, increased liver enzymes

Avoid in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis), especially with fever or malaise. Use caution in heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney impairment, elderly, and those with history of muscle disorders. Periodic lipid and liver function monitoring may be advised.

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, ritonavir/cobicistat), grapefruit juice (large amounts), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil and other fibrates, niacin (high dose), colchicine, warfarin/other anticoagulants (monitor INR), ezetimibe (increased myopathy risk)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place; protect from light and moisture; keep out of reach of children.
