What is the CBC Test?
A CBC measures the main parts of your blood: haemoglobin, red blood cells, white blood cells and their types, and platelets. It is one of the most common blood tests and helps a doctor check for anaemia, infection, bleeding risk and many other conditions.

What your CBC Test result means
- Low haemoglobin
- Indicates anaemia. The red cell indices (MCV, MCH) help a doctor tell iron deficiency from B12 or folate deficiency and other causes.
- High or low white cells
- A high count often goes with bacterial infection or inflammation; a low count can occur with viral infections such as dengue, some medicines or bone marrow problems.
- Low platelets
- Can be seen in dengue and other infections, some medicines and blood disorders. Very low counts raise bleeding risk and need prompt medical advice.
- High haemoglobin or PCV
- Can occur with dehydration, smoking, long-standing lung disease or, less often, a bone marrow condition. A doctor repeats or extends testing as needed.
One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.
CBC Test levels: what does my number mean?
- Haemoglobin 11 to 12.9 g/dL
- Mild anaemia for an adult man (below 13); for a non-pregnant woman, below 12. Iron deficiency is the most common cause in India. Often checked next: Ferritin Test.
- Haemoglobin 8 to 10.9 g/dL
- Moderate anaemia. Doctors look for the cause, starting with iron, vitamin B12 and blood loss. Often checked next: Iron Profile Test.
- Haemoglobin below 8 g/dL
- Severe anaemia. It needs a doctor's review soon, and the same day with breathlessness, chest pain or fainting. Often checked next: Iron Profile Test.
- Platelet count 1 lakh (100,000/µL)
- Low (normal is about 1.5 to 4.5 lakh). During fever it is commonly due to a viral infection such as dengue; doctors repeat the count daily while the fever lasts. Often checked next: Dengue Profile Test.
- Platelet count below 50,000/µL
- Markedly low, with a higher bleeding risk. It needs a doctor's review the same day; below 20,000, or with bleeding gums or black stools, go to hospital. Often checked next: Dengue NS1 Test.

What is the difference between CBC and CBP?
They are the same test. CBP (complete blood picture) is a name used in parts of India for the complete blood count. Some laboratories also add a peripheral smear review under the CBP name, which your report will state.
Is fasting required for a CBC test?
No. A CBC does not need fasting and you can eat and drink normally. Drinking water is fine.
What does a CBC test show?
It shows whether you have enough red cells and haemoglobin to carry oxygen, whether your white cells suggest infection or inflammation, and whether your platelets are enough for normal clotting. It does not test liver, kidney, sugar or thyroid function.
Why is CBC repeated daily in dengue?
In dengue the platelet count and PCV can change quickly over a few days. Doctors repeat the CBC to watch for a falling platelet count and a rising PCV, which can signal the critical phase.
