What is the Testosterone Test?
The total testosterone test measures the main male sex hormone in blood, both the bound and free forms. In men it is used to check for low testosterone; in women it helps assess excess male hormones, such as in PCOS.
Testosterone Test normal range
| Measurement | Typical adult value |
|---|---|
| Men (19–39 years, morning sample) | about 264–916 ng/dL |
| Women | roughly 8–60 ng/dL, depending on assay and age |
Testosterone is highest in the morning and can fall after illness, poor sleep or a heavy meal, so a sample before about 10 a.m. is preferred. Low results are confirmed on a second morning sample.
Ranges differ between laboratories and methods. The reference range printed on your own report is the one to read your result against.
What your Testosterone Test result means
- Low (men)
- The American Urological Association uses below 300 ng/dL on two early-morning samples, together with symptoms, to define testosterone deficiency. Causes include obesity, diabetes, pituitary or testicular problems and some medicines.
- High (women)
- Often seen in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Very high levels are less common and may need tests for an adrenal or ovarian cause.
- High (men)
- Usually linked to testosterone or anabolic steroid use; rarely, a hormone-producing tumour.
One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.
Testosterone Test levels: what does my number mean?
- Testosterone below 264 ng/dL (men)
- Below the standardised adult male range. The Endocrine Society advises confirming with a second early-morning fasting sample before calling it low, as levels fall during the day and with illness.
- Testosterone 264 to 916 ng/dL (men)
- Within the standardised range for adult men aged 19 to 39.
Typical adult cut-offs. Read your number against the range printed on your own report, and with a doctor if it is outside it.

- Low sex drive, erectile problems or reduced morning erections
