Online consultation for dandruff

Most dandruff is seborrhoeic dermatitis: the scalp reacts to a yeast that lives on everyone's skin. It is controlled with medicated shampoos used the right way, and it tends to come back, so the plan includes how to keep it away. Thick scales may be psoriasis, and flaking with hair loss in a child may be a fungal infection, which need different treatment.

An online consult can help with

  • Flakes and itching that keep coming back
  • Flaking in the eyebrows, beside the nose or behind the ears
  • Anti-dandruff shampoos that have stopped working
  • Checking whether it is dandruff, psoriasis or a fungal infection
  • Dandruff with hair fall

See a doctor in person if

  • Trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion or a seizure: go to the nearest emergency department or call 108.
  • Painful, swollen patches on the scalp with pus or fever
  • Round bald patches with scaling, especially in a child (may be a scalp fungal infection that needs tablets)
  • Red, scaly skin spreading over the body

How an online consultation works

  1. 1

Tell the doctor what is wrong

A few short questions, about two minutes. Add photos or reports if you have them.

  2. 2

    Pay. The chat opens.

Chat from ₹199. A doctor usually replies within 30 minutes. The doctor can switch to video if needed; some prescription medicines need a short video call first.

  3. 3

    A plan, in writing

What it is likely to be, what to take and what to avoid. A prescription where appropriate, and 48 hours of follow-up questions in the same chat.

  4. 4

    Tests at home, if needed

Book any test the doctor suggests with home sample collection where available, and share the report in the same chat within the 48 hours.

What the doctor may do

  • Tell you from your photos whether it is dandruff, psoriasis or a fungal infection
  • Prescribe a medicated shampoo and show how to use it (how long to leave it on, how often)
  • Add a lotion for the scalp or a cream for the face, where clinically appropriate
  • Plan how to keep it away once it clears
  • Check whether hair fall is linked, and what to do about it

Frequently asked questions

Does oiling help dandruff?
Usually not. The yeast behind dandruff feeds on oil, so heavy oiling can make it worse. The doctor tells you what to use instead.
Will dandruff come back?
It often does, especially in humid weather or under stress. Using the medicated shampoo once or twice a week after it clears keeps it away for most people.
Does dandruff cause hair fall?
Dandruff itself rarely causes hair loss, but scratching can break hair and both are common together. If you are losing hair, the doctor checks for other causes too.
Who will I be speaking to?
A registered doctor from PingMeDoc's online panel. Skin and hair consults go first to our doctor who leads skin care (MBBS, with fellowships in aesthetic medicine and cosmetic dermatology) when she is available; otherwise a general physician takes the consult. There is no MD dermatologist on the panel yet: the doctor tells you when you need to see one in person. Every doctor's registration is checked before they join.
How much does the online consultation cost?
A chat consultation starts at ₹199. The exact fee is shown before you pay, and it includes 48 hours of follow-up questions in the same chat.
How quickly will a doctor reply?
The chat opens as soon as you pay. A doctor usually replies within 30 minutes, and the doctor can switch to a call or video if they need to see you.
