Bone & Calcium Health

Calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium, and bone density supplements for strong bones and osteoporosis prevention.

Bone health is critical throughout life — peak bone mass is built during childhood and early adulthood, while maintaining bone density becomes the focus after age 30. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake are essential.

Calcium supplements (500-600mg per dose, 1000-1200mg daily total) come in various forms. Calcium carbonate is most common and should be taken with food. Calcium citrate can be taken on an empty stomach and may be better absorbed.

Vitamin D3 is essential for calcium absorption — without adequate vitamin D, the body absorbs only 10-15% of dietary calcium. Combined calcium + D3 supplements are convenient and effective. Magnesium also plays a role in bone health.

Bone & Calcium Health: Frequently Asked Questions

How much calcium do I need daily?
Adults 19-50: 1000mg daily. Women 50+ and men 70+: 1200mg daily. Pregnant/lactating women: 1000-1300mg. Try to get calcium from food first (dairy, leafy greens, fortified foods). Supplement only the gap between diet and daily requirement.
Can I take calcium and iron together?
No, calcium inhibits iron absorption. Take them at least 2-4 hours apart. For example, take iron in the morning on an empty stomach and calcium in the evening with dinner. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption.
What are signs of calcium deficiency?
Early signs include muscle cramps, tingling in fingers, fatigue, and brittle nails. Severe deficiency can lead to osteopenia and osteoporosis (weak, fragile bones). A DEXA scan measures bone density and helps diagnose bone loss early.
