How Alex Junior Syrup works

aLEX junior Syrup is a combination of two medicines, Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, that relieve dry cough. Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic medicine that helps reduce cough associated with allergies by blocking the effects of a chemical messenger called histamine. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is a cough suppressant that relieves cough by reducing the activity of the cough center in the brain.

How to take Alex Junior Syrup

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. aLEX junior Syrup may be taken with or without food.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of aLEX junior Syrup, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe drowsiness, a fast heartbeat, confusion and, in children, agitation and fits. It can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Alex Junior are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Older antihistamines cause marked drowsiness — do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this affects you. Tell your doctor promptly about any change in mood, sleep, agitation or unusual thoughts while taking montelukast; this is uncommon but recognised. This relieves the symptoms of an allergy; it does not treat the cause, and it is not a treatment for an acute asthma attack. Seek emergency care for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than a week, or comes with fever, breathlessness, chest pain or blood in the sputum. Do not give cough and cold preparations to young children except on a doctor's advice. Do not combine two cough preparations — they frequently contain the same ingredients, and the doses add up. Preparations containing codeine can cause dependence and must be used only for the period your doctor specifies.

Do not take Alex Junior if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. The sedating antihistamines are not suitable for very young children, or for people with glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, without medical advice. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol, sleeping tablets and other sedating medicines add to the drowsiness. Tell your doctor about all cold and cough preparations — many already contain an antihistamine. Sedating ingredients add to the effect of alcohol and sleeping tablets. Decongestants such as phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure — tell your doctor if you are hypertensive.

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Once opened, use it within the period printed on the pack. Keep out of the reach of children.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking aLEX junior Syrup, as this helps soothe the throat and reduce irritation. aLEX junior Syrup may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. It is better to avoid alcohol while taking aLEX junior Syrup, as it may increase drowsiness. Dry mouth can occur after taking this medicine. Frequent sips of water can help maintain good oral hygiene. Do not combine aLEX junior Syrup with other cough or cold medicines unless advised by your doctor. Avoid smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, as it may worsen cough and throat irritation. Stop taking aLEX junior Syrup and seek medical help if you develop rash, swelling of the face, or difficulty breathing. Consult your doctor if cough lasts more than 7 days, keeps recurring, or occurs with fever, rash, or persistent headache. Seek medical attention if cough is associated with high fever, breathlessness, chest pain, or coughing up blood. Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma or urinary retention before using aLEX junior Syrup. Do not use aLEX junior Syrup for cough with mucus (wet cough), as it may prevent clearance of phlegm. Do not take aLEX junior Syrup with antidepressants or similar medicines without consulting your doctor, as it may cause serious side effects.
