Composition of Amaryl M 2 Tablet

Amaryl M 2 Tablet contains Glimepiride 2 mg + Metformin (sustained release) 500 mg. It belongs to the Sulfonylurea + Biguanide class of medicines.

How Amaryl M 2 Tablet works

Glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) increases insulin release from the pancreas. Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, helping the body use insulin better. Together they lower fasting and post-meal blood glucose.

How to take Amaryl M 2 Tablet

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usually taken once daily with/after food (preferably with breakfast) to reduce stomach upset and risk of low sugar. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew (SR). Monitor blood glucose regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and prolonged low blood sugar, which may lead to fits or unconsciousness. It can cause a dangerous build-up of acid in the blood, with vomiting, severe weakness and laboured breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Amaryl M 2 Tablet

Most side effects of Amaryl M are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
• nausea
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• vomiting
• headache
• dizziness
• metallic taste
• weight gain

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of hypoglycaemia (especially with missed meals, strenuous exercise, or alcohol); carry sugar/glucose. Metformin can rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk increases in kidney or liver disease, severe infection, dehydration, heavy alcohol use, or low oxygen states; avoid in severe renal impairment and temporarily stop during severe illness. Inform doctor before surgery or iodinated contrast scans (may need to stop metformin). Monitor kidney function and vitamin B12 with long-term use. Use caution in elderly and those with irregular eating habits.

Do not take Amaryl M if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or an acute illness causing dehydration. Not for people who have had diabetic ketoacidosis.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol (increases hypoglycaemia/lactic acidosis risk), insulin/other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (raise blood sugar), ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia), rifampicin (reduces effect), azole antifungals/clarithromycin (increase hypoglycaemia risk), iodinated contrast media (lactic acidosis risk with metformin), cimetidine (increases metformin levels)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Amaryl M 2 Tablet

Take it shortly before a meal, and eat that meal. Check your sugar as often as your doctor has asked, especially when your routine changes. Take it with or just after food to reduce stomach upset. Keep taking it even when your sugar readings look normal — that is the medicine working. Continue your diet and physical activity; this medicine works alongside them, not instead of them.
