Composition of Anovate Cream

Anovate Cream contains Phenylephrine 0.1% w/w + Beclometasone dipropionate 0.025% w/w + Lidocaine (Lignocaine) 2% w/w + Zinc oxide 10% w/w. It belongs to the Topical corticosteroid + local anaesthetic + alpha-1 adrenergic agonist (vasoconstrictor) + skin protectant class of medicines.

How Anovate Cream works

Lidocaine provides local anaesthesia to reduce pain and burning. Phenylephrine is a vasoconstrictor that shrinks swollen haemorrhoidal tissue and reduces bleeding. Beclometasone reduces inflammation and itching, while zinc oxide forms a protective barrier and soothes irritated skin.

How to take Anovate Cream

For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer around the anus (and if advised, just inside using an applicator) 2-3 times daily, preferably after bowel movement and at bedtime. Use as directed by a doctor; do not use for prolonged periods due to steroid content.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. It can cause a racing heart, marked tremor, headache and a fall in blood potassium. It is unlikely from external use. It is unlikely from skin use; swallowing the preparation may cause stomach upset. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Anovate Cream

Most side effects of Anovate are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and broken/oozing skin. Do not use if you have untreated bacterial, fungal or viral infection at the application site. Prolonged or excessive use may cause skin thinning and other steroid-related effects; use the smallest amount for the shortest duration. Consult a doctor for severe bleeding, persistent pain, or if symptoms do not improve within a few days. Use in children only on medical advice.

Do not take Anovate if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty. Not for anyone with a known allergy to the propellant used in the inhaler. Not for use on large burns or deep wounds without medical advice. Not for use on broken or infected skin unless prescribed.

Interactions with other medicines

No major systemic interactions expected with correct topical use; avoid using other topical steroids/anaesthetics/irritant preparations on the same area unless prescribed. Use caution if taking MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants (theoretical increased sensitivity to phenylephrine).

How to store Anovate Cream

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct light. Keep the tube tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Anovate Cream

Drink plenty of water — it thins mucus better than any syrup. Steam inhalation helps congestion and costs nothing. Measure the dose with the cup supplied. Keep a spare reliever and check the counter so you are not caught with an empty one. Follow your written asthma action plan if you have one. Do not stop a preventer because you feel better — that is the medicine working. Clean the wound first, then apply, and keep it covered and dry. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin. Wash your hands after use.
