Glimepiride 3 mg tablet
Gliben 3 mg Tablet is used for type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent) to help control blood glucose, as an adjunct to diet and exercise; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Gliben 3 mg Tablet contains Glimepiride 3 mg tablet. It belongs to the Sulfonylurea (second-generation) class of medicines.
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells by closing ATP-sensitive potassium channels. This increases insulin secretion and helps lower blood glucose, especially after meals.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Swallow whole with water; do not skip meals after taking as it may cause low blood sugar. Dose is individualized based on blood glucose/HbA1c; follow your doctor’s instructions.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Gliben as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Gliben than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Gliben are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Not recommended; consult doctor (insulin is generally preferred in pregnancy) |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | Avoid or use with caution (can cause/worsen hypoglycaemia) |
| Habit forming | No |
Risk of hypoglycaemia—more likely if meals are skipped, after strenuous exercise, with alcohol, in elderly, or with kidney/liver impairment. Monitor blood glucose regularly. Use with caution in renal/hepatic disease; dose adjustments may be needed. Inform doctor if you have sulfonylurea/sulfonamide allergy, G6PD deficiency (risk of haemolysis), or if you are fasting/ill. Seek urgent care for severe hypoglycaemia, jaundice, unusual bruising/bleeding, or allergic reactions. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Other antidiabetics/insulin (increased hypoglycaemia risk), alcohol (may increase hypoglycaemia), fluconazole/miconazole (may increase effect), macrolides (e.g., clarithromycin), sulfonamides, warfarin (may alter anticoagulant effect), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids/thiazide diuretics/sympathomimetics (may raise glucose and reduce effect), rifampicin (may reduce effect)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
