Composition of Glimefort-M1 Tablet

Glimefort-M1 Tablet contains Glimepiride 1 mg + Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg (modified/extended release). It belongs to the Sulfonylurea + Biguanide class of medicines.

Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet and exercise alone (or single drug therapy) are insufficient; helps control high blood sugar and reduce diabetes-related complications.

How Glimefort-M1 Tablet works

Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that increases insulin release from the pancreas and improves peripheral glucose utilization. Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, lowering intestinal glucose absorption and improving glycaemic control.

How to take Glimefort-M1 Tablet

Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once daily with or just after a meal (preferably breakfast) to reduce stomach upset and risk of hypoglycaemia. Swallow tablets whole (do not crush/chew if modified-release). Monitor blood glucose regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and prolonged low blood sugar, which may lead to fits or unconsciousness. It can cause a dangerous build-up of acid in the blood, with vomiting, severe weakness and laboured breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Glimefort-M1 Tablet

Most side effects of Glimefort-M1 are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Hypoglycaemia

• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• loss of appetite
• metallic taste
• headache
• dizziness
• weight gain
• skin rash

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use only in type 2 diabetes (not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis). Risk of hypoglycaemia (higher with missed meals, excessive exercise, alcohol, or other antidiabetics); keep fast-acting glucose available. Metformin can rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk increases with severe kidney impairment, dehydration, severe infection, shock, or excess alcohol; dose adjustment/avoid in renal impairment. Use caution in liver disease, heart failure, elderly, and during fasting. Stop temporarily before/after iodinated contrast studies and major surgery as advised by doctor. Inform doctor if symptoms of lactic acidosis occur (rapid breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain, unusual sleepiness).

Do not take Glimefort-M1 if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or an acute illness causing dehydration. Not for people who have had diabetic ketoacidosis.

Interactions with other medicines

Insulin and other antidiabetics (increased hypoglycaemia), alcohol (increased hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis risk), corticosteroids and diuretics (may increase glucose), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), ACE inhibitors (may enhance glucose-lowering), fluoroquinolones (dysglycaemia), azole antifungals/macrolides (may increase sulfonylurea effect), rifampicin (may reduce effect), iodinated contrast media (lactic acidosis risk with metformin), cimetidine (increases metformin levels)

How to store Glimefort-M1 Tablet

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Glimefort-M1 Tablet

Take it shortly before a meal, and eat that meal. Check your sugar as often as your doctor has asked, especially when your routine changes. Take it with or just after food to reduce stomach upset. Keep taking it even when your sugar readings look normal — that is the medicine working. Continue your diet and physical activity; this medicine works alongside them, not instead of them.
