Metgem 1gm Tablet ER is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is used in addition to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Metformin is an anti-diabetic medication (biguanide). It works by lowering glucose production in the liver, delaying sugar (glucose) absorption from intestines and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin.
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Metgem 1gm Tablet ER is to be taken with food.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Metgem as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Metgem than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Metgem are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

| Alcohol | Taking metformin with alcohol can cause lactic acidosis and you may experience malaise, respiratory distress, slow or irregular heartbeat, sleepiness, stomach upset, or other unusual symptoms. |
| Kidney | Metgem 1gm Tablet ER should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Metgem 1gm Tablet ER may be needed. Please consult your doctor.<br/>Use of Metgem 1gm Tablet ER is, however, not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease. Regular monitoring of kidney function test is advisable while you are taking this medicine. |
| Liver | Metgem 1gm Tablet ER should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Metgem 1gm Tablet ER may be needed. Please consult your doctor.<br/>Metgem 1gm Tablet ER is generally started with low dose in patients with mild to moderate liver disease and its use is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease. |

Store Metgem below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the pack tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date printed on the pack.
