How Methergin Injection works

Methergin Injection is an ergot alkaloid. It works by causing sustained contractions of the smooth muscles of the uterus. This results in compression of the blood vessels which controls bleeding after delivery.

How to take Methergin Injection

Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. Kindly do not self administer.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

If you miss a dose of Methergin Injection, please consult your doctor.

If you take too much

Taking more Methergin than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.

Most side effects of Methergin are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

How to store Methergin Injection

Store Methergin below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the pack tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date printed on the pack.

Expert advice for Methergin Injection

Methergin Injection is used for the prevention and control of post-delivery bleeding. It may also be used for the active management of the third stage of labor, to facilitate the delivery of the placenta. It is given intravenously (into a vein) or intramuscularly (into the muscle) by a doctor or healthcare provider in a hospital or clinic. Its dose may be repeated as required at intervals of 2 to 4 hours. It should be avoided in patients, with high blood pressure, and heart disease.
