Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), chronic heart failure (as add-on where appropriate), and rate control in certain tachyarrhythmias as prescribed; secondary prevention after myocardial infarction as advised by doctor
Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand. The extended-release (XL) formulation provides sustained effect over 24 hours.
Oral tablet (extended-release). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day; can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not crush, chew, or split unless advised.
Common side effects of Metosux XL 50 may include:

Do not stop suddenly (may worsen angina/trigger heart attack); taper only under medical supervision. Use with caution in asthma/COPD, diabetes (may mask hypoglycemia symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with low heart rate, heart block, or severe hypotension. In heart failure, initiate/titrate as directed; seek help for worsening breathlessness, swelling, or sudden weight gain. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected.
