Metosux XL 50 contains Metoprolol succinate prolonged-release 50 mg. It belongs to the Selective beta-1 blocker (beta-blocker) class of medicines.

How Metosux XL 50 works

Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand. The extended-release (XL) formulation provides sustained effect over 24 hours.

How to take Metosux XL 50

Oral tablet (extended-release). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day; can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not crush, chew, or split unless advised.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take the missed dose of Metosux XL as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

If you take too much

Taking more Metosux XL than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.

Side effects of Metosux XL 50

Most side effects of Metosux XL are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• tiredness
• dizziness
• slow heart rate (bradycardia)
• low blood pressure
• cold hands/feet
• headache
• nausea
• diarrhea
• shortness of breath (occasionally)
• sleep disturbance

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Safety advice for Metosux XL 50

Warnings and precautions

Do not stop suddenly (may worsen angina/trigger heart attack); taper only under medical supervision. Use with caution in asthma/COPD, diabetes (may mask hypoglycemia symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with low heart rate, heart block, or severe hypotension. In heart failure, initiate/titrate as directed; seek help for worsening breathlessness, swelling, or sudden weight gain. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected.

Interactions with other medicines

Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), verapamil/diltiazem (risk of bradycardia/heart block), digoxin (bradycardia), antiarrhythmics e.g., amiodarone (conduction effects), clonidine (rebound hypertension on withdrawal), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), NSAIDs (may reduce BP-lowering effect), CYP2D6 inhibitors e.g., fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels)

How to store Metosux XL 50

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
