Composition of Pionorm-15 mg Tablet

Pionorm-15 mg Tablet contains Glimepiride (2mg) + Pioglitazone (15mg). It belongs to the Thiazolidinedione (PPAR-gamma agonist) class of medicines.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to improve glycaemic control) as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines when diet and exercise alone are inadequate

How Pionorm-15 mg Tablet works

Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione that activates PPAR-γ receptors, improving insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue, skeletal muscle and liver. It increases peripheral glucose uptake and reduces hepatic glucose output, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.

How to take Pionorm-15 mg Tablet

Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food. Take at the same time each day; continue diet and exercise plan. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and prolonged low blood sugar, which may lead to fits or unconsciousness. It may cause low blood sugar and marked stomach upset. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Pionorm-15 mg are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• headache
• dizziness
• upper respiratory tract infection
• muscle pain
• increased liver enzymes
• hypoglycaemia (when used with insulin/sulfonylureas)

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Can cause fluid retention and may worsen or cause heart failure—avoid in NYHA Class III/IV heart failure and use caution in patients with oedema or cardiac disease. Monitor for weight gain and shortness of breath. Liver function should be checked before and during therapy; avoid in active liver disease. May increase risk of bone fractures (especially in women). Use caution in patients with history of bladder cancer or unexplained haematuria; report blood in urine. Regular monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c is recommended.

Do not take Pionorm-15 mg if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with heart failure, active bladder cancer or unexplained blood in the urine.

Interactions with other medicines

Insulin (increased risk of oedema/heart failure and hypoglycaemia), sulfonylureas (hypoglycaemia), gemfibrozil (increases pioglitazone levels), rifampicin (reduces pioglitazone levels), oral contraceptives containing ethinylestradiol/norethindrone (may reduce hormone levels), other hepatotoxic drugs (increased liver risk)

How to store Pionorm-15 mg Tablet

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Pionorm-15 mg Tablet

Take it shortly before a meal, and eat that meal. Check your sugar as often as your doctor has asked, especially when your routine changes. Take it with the first mouthful of your meal so it can act on that meal. Expect some wind in the first weeks; it usually settles.
