Metformin hydrochloride sustained-release 500 mg
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to control blood sugar), especially in overweight patients; used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines along with diet and exercise
Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and decreases intestinal absorption of glucose. It also improves insulin sensitivity, helping body tissues use glucose more effectively, thereby lowering blood sugar.
Oral tablet (sustained-release). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with the evening meal or with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole—do not crush, chew, or split; a ‘tablet shell’ may appear in stool.
Common side effects of ZAVAMET SR 500 TAB may include:
Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious)—seek urgent care for fast breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain, or unusual sleepiness. Use with caution in kidney or liver disease; dose adjustment/avoid if renal function is significantly reduced. Stop temporarily before/after iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as advised by doctor. Monitor blood glucose and HbA1c; long-term use may reduce vitamin B12. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
