Warnings and precautions

Prescription-only benzodiazepine; may cause dependence, abuse and withdrawal—use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Can cause sedation and impaired alertness; avoid driving/operating machinery. Do not stop abruptly (risk of withdrawal, seizures). Use with caution in elderly, liver disease, respiratory disease (COPD/sleep apnoea), depression or suicidal ideation, and history of substance use disorder. Seek urgent help if severe sleepiness, breathing difficulty, or allergic reaction occurs.

Do not take Zolam if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with severe breathing problems, sleep apnoea, or severe liver disease. Not for anyone with a history of dependence, except under specialist supervision.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics) increase sedation/respiratory depression. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole/itraconazole, clarithromycin/erythromycin, ritonavir/cobicistat) can raise alprazolam levels; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin) can reduce effect. Additive effects with other anxiolytics/sedatives.
