Zyfurox 500 Tablet contains Cefuroxime axetil 500 mg. It belongs to the Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic class of medicines.

How Zyfurox 500 Tablet works

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis (binding to penicillin-binding proteins), leading to cell lysis. It works only for bacterial infections, not viral infections.

How to take Zyfurox 500 Tablet

Oral tablet: take exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Usually taken after food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not crush/chew. Complete the full course even if you feel better.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and, rarely, fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Warnings and precautions

Prescription-only antibiotic. Do not use in patients with known allergy to cefuroxime/cephalosporins; use caution with history of severe penicillin allergy. Prolonged use may cause superinfection (e.g., thrush) or antibiotic-associated diarrhoea/colitis; seek medical help for severe/persistent diarrhoea. May cause dizziness—use caution while driving if affected.

Interactions with other medicines

Probenecid (increases cefuroxime levels), anticoagulants such as warfarin (may increase bleeding risk/INR), antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs (may reduce absorption of cefuroxime axetil), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy—use additional contraception during therapy and for 7 days after), other nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides, high-dose diuretics—monitor renal function).

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
