Composition of Acitrom 4 Tablet

Acitrom 4 Tablet contains Acenocoumarol (4mg). It belongs to the Vitamin K antagonist (coumarin derivative) class of medicines.

• Prevention and treatment of blood clots (thromboembolism) such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
• pulmonary embolism (PE); prevention of stroke/systemic embolism in atrial fibrillation; prevention of clotting in patients with prosthetic heart valves and other high-risk conditions

How Acitrom 4 Tablet works

Acenocoumarol is a vitamin K antagonist anticoagulant. It inhibits vitamin K–dependent clotting factors (II, VII, IX, X) in the liver, reducing the blood’s ability to form clots. Its effect is monitored using PT/INR.

How to take Acitrom 4 Tablet

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day. Dose is individualized based on INR; do not change dose or stop without medical advice. Can be taken with or without food; keep dietary vitamin K intake consistent and attend regular INR testing.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Acitrom 4 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause serious and difficult-to-control bleeding. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Acitrom are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

High risk of serious bleeding; seek urgent care for unusual bleeding, severe headache, weakness, vomiting blood, or black stools. Requires regular PT/INR monitoring. Use with caution in liver or kidney disease, uncontrolled hypertension, history of bleeding, peptic ulcer, recent surgery/trauma, alcohol misuse, and in elderly patients. Maintain consistent vitamin K intake; avoid sudden dietary changes. Inform healthcare providers before any procedure/dental work. Do not self-medicate with painkillers like NSAIDs without advice.

Do not take Acitrom if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with active bleeding, a bleeding disorder, or a recent bleed into the brain.

Interactions with other medicines

Other anticoagulants (heparin, DOACs), antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel), NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac), many antibiotics (e.g., macrolides, fluoroquinolones, cotrimoxazole), antifungals (azole group), amiodarone, statins (some), antiepileptics (phenytoin, carbamazepine), thyroid hormones, SSRIs/SNRIs, corticosteroids, herbal products (St John’s wort, ginkgo, garlic) and vitamin K-containing supplements/foods

How to store Acitrom 4 Tablet

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), in a dry place away from moisture and direct light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Acitrom 4 Tablet

Avoid making sudden major changes to your diet during treatment with this medicine. Acitrom 4 Tablet increases your risk of bleeding. Be careful while shaving, cutting fingernails or toenails, using sharp objects, or engaging in contact sports (e.g., football, wrestling). Notify your doctor if you see blood in your vomit, urine, or stool (black, tarry stools or bright red blood). Do not consume alcohol while taking Acitrom 4 Tablet, as this may increase its side effects. If you are going to have a surgery or dental treatment, you may be asked to stop taking Acitrom 4 Tablet temporarily. Do not discontinue use without consulting your doctor, as this may increase your chances of having another heart attack or stroke. Your doctor may get regular blood tests done to make sure Acitrom 4 Tablet is working properly.
