Aten 100 contains Atenolol (100mg). It belongs to the Beta-blocker (beta-1 selective) class of medicines.

How Aten 100 works

Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-1 blocker. It reduces heart rate and the force of contraction, lowering cardiac output and blood pressure, and decreases the heart’s oxygen demand to relieve angina.

How to take Aten 100

Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. Do not stop abruptly; dose should be tapered under medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Aten 100 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a dangerously slow heartbeat, a severe fall in blood pressure, wheezing and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Aten 100

Most side effects of Aten are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Bradycardia (slow pulse)
• fatigue
• dizziness
• cold hands/feet
• low blood pressure
• nausea
• headache
• sleep disturbances

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Do not stop suddenly (risk of rebound angina/MI). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may cause bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), peripheral vascular disease, psoriasis, myasthenia gravis, and in the elderly. Contraindicated/avoid in severe bradycardia, second/third-degree heart block, cardiogenic shock, uncontrolled heart failure unless stabilized. Monitor blood pressure and pulse; caution while driving if dizzy.

Do not take Aten if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with a very slow heart rate, certain heart block disorders, or uncontrolled heart failure. Generally avoided in severe asthma.

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Aten 100

It may cause dizziness. If this happens to you, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. It can hide symptoms of low blood sugar if you are diabetic. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. Do not stop taking Aten 100 Tablet suddenly as it can cause your blood pressure to rise suddenly, thereby increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
