Azulix 2 MF Tablet contains Glimepiride (2mg) + Metformin (500mg). It belongs to the Sulfonylurea + Biguanide class of medicines.

How Azulix 2 MF Tablet works

Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that increases insulin release from the pancreas and improves peripheral glucose utilization. Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, lowering blood glucose without usually causing hypoglycaemia on its own.

How to take Azulix 2 MF Tablet

Take exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once daily with or immediately after food (often with breakfast) to reduce stomach upset and hypoglycaemia risk. Swallow whole; do not crush or chew if modified-release. Monitor blood glucose regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Azulix 2 MF Tablet PR, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and prolonged low blood sugar, which may lead to fits or unconsciousness. It can cause a dangerous build-up of acid in the blood, with vomiting, severe weakness and laboured breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Azulix 2 MF Tablet

Most side effects of Azulix are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Hypoglycaemia

• abdominal pain
• loss of appetite
• metallic taste
• headache
• dizziness
• weight gain
• skin rash

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of hypoglycaemia (higher with missed meals, alcohol, excessive exercise, elderly). Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—seek urgent care for rapid breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain, drowsiness. Use with caution in kidney or liver disease; periodic renal function monitoring needed. Temporarily stop metformin during severe dehydration, serious infection, surgery, or before/after iodinated contrast procedures as advised by doctor. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Do not take Azulix if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or an acute illness causing dehydration. Not for people who have had diabetic ketoacidosis.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol (increases hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis risk), insulin/other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and diuretics (may raise blood sugar), ACE inhibitors (may enhance glucose-lowering), fluoroquinolones (glucose disturbances), cimetidine (may increase metformin levels), iodinated contrast media (kidney injury/lactic acidosis risk), NSAIDs and other nephrotoxic drugs (renal risk)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Azulix 2 MF Tablet

You should continue to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take your other diabetes medicines along with Azulix 2 MF Tablet PR. Take it with food to lower your chance of having an upset stomach. Monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine. It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal. Inform your doctor about your diabetes treatment if you are due to have surgery under a general anesthetic. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any deep or rapid breathing or if you have persistent nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain as Azulix 2 MF Tablet PR may cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, which is an excess of lactic acid in the blood. Your doctor may check your liver function regularly. Inform your doctor if you develop symptoms such as abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).
