A substitute contains the same active ingredient (salt), in the same strength, as Canesten S Cream. The medicine inside is the same — the brand name, manufacturer and price are what differ.
All medicines sold in India, branded or generic, must meet the quality standards set by the national drug regulator (CDSCO). A lower price does not mean lower quality.
Please confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before switching brands — they will check that the strength and form match your prescription.
Canesten S Cream contains Clotrimazole 1% w/w cream. It belongs to the Imidazole antifungal class of medicines.
Clotrimazole is an imidazole antifungal that inhibits synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This damages the fungal cell membrane, leading to leakage of cellular contents and death or inhibition of fungal growth.
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer to the affected skin and surrounding area 2–3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. Continue use for the full prescribed duration (often 2–4 weeks) even if symptoms improve; wash hands after application and avoid covering with tight/occlusive dressings unless advised.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Canesten S as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Canesten S than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Canesten S are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose and broken skin; rinse with water if contact occurs. Stop use and seek medical advice if severe irritation/allergic reaction occurs or if no improvement within 1–2 weeks (depending on site) or symptoms worsen. Use with caution on large areas or under occlusion. If used for genital area, note that topical azoles may reduce the effectiveness of latex condoms/diaphragms during and shortly after use. Not for scalp/nails unless advised by a doctor.
No significant systemic drug interactions expected with topical use; may reduce effectiveness of latex contraceptives (condoms/diaphragms) when applied to genital area; avoid using multiple topical products on same area unless advised.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from heat and direct light. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of reach of children.
