Glycomet GP 0.5 Tablet contains Glimepiride (0.5mg) + Metformin (500mg). It belongs to the Sulfonylurea + Biguanide class of medicines.

How Glycomet GP 0.5 Tablet works

Glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) increases insulin release from the pancreas. Metformin (a biguanide) reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, lowering blood glucose levels.

How to take Glycomet GP 0.5 Tablet

Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once daily with food (often with breakfast) to reduce stomach upset and risk of low sugar. Swallow whole with water; do not crush/chew if it is SR/ER.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Glycomet-GP 0.5 Tablet SR, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and prolonged low blood sugar, which may lead to fits or unconsciousness. It can cause a dangerous build-up of acid in the blood, with vomiting, severe weakness and laboured breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Glycomet GP 0.5 Tablet

Most side effects of Glycomet GP are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
• nausea
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• loss of appetite
• metallic taste
• headache
• dizziness
• weight gain
• skin rash

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

May cause hypoglycaemia—risk increases with missed meals, excess exercise, alcohol, or with other antidiabetics; carry glucose. Metformin rarely may cause lactic acidosis—risk higher with kidney disease, dehydration, severe infection, heart/respiratory failure, heavy alcohol use; stop and seek care for rapid breathing, severe weakness, muscle pain, unusual sleepiness. Avoid in severe renal impairment; kidney function should be checked before and during therapy. Temporarily stop metformin around iodinated contrast studies and major surgery as advised. Use caution in elderly and in liver disease; monitor blood glucose and HbA1c regularly.

Do not take Glycomet GP if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Not for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Not for people with severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or an acute illness causing dehydration. Not for people who have had diabetic ketoacidosis.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol (increases hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis risk), insulin/other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (raise blood sugar), ACE inhibitors (may enhance glucose-lowering), fluoroquinolones (may alter glucose), NSAIDs and sulfonamides (may increase hypoglycaemia), cimetidine (increases metformin levels), iodinated contrast media (increases lactic acidosis risk)

How to store Glycomet GP 0.5 Tablet

Store below 25°C in a dry place; protect from moisture and direct light; keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Glycomet GP 0.5 Tablet

You should continue to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take your other diabetes medicines along with Glycomet-GP 0.5 Tablet SR. Take it with food to lower your chance of having an upset stomach. Monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine. It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal. Inform your doctor about your diabetes treatment if you are due to have surgery under a general anesthetic. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any deep or rapid breathing or if you have persistent nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain as Glycomet-GP 0.5 Tablet SR may cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, which is an excess of lactic acid in the blood. Your doctor may check your liver function regularly. Inform your doctor if you develop symptoms such as abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).
