How Orty Orange works

This medicine combines 4 active ingredients: Sodium, Potassium, Sodium Citrate and Dextrose. Sodium supplies a vitamin, mineral or nutrient that your diet may not be providing in sufficient amount. Potassium supplies a vitamin, mineral or nutrient that your diet may not be providing in sufficient amount. Sodium Citrate softens the stool and encourages the bowel to move, making it easier to pass. Dextrose supplies protein and amino acids, the building blocks your body uses to repair and maintain muscle and tissue.

How to take Orty Orange

Use this medicine as your doctor has directed. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting and stomach pain, and with iron can be dangerous, especially in children. It can cause severe loose motions, dehydration and salt imbalance. It may cause stomach upset and, with prolonged excess, puts avoidable load on the kidneys. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Orty Orange

Most side effects of Orty Orange are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach upset
  • Loose motions
  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

A supplement is not a substitute for a balanced diet or for treating the cause of a symptom. Iron makes stools black and can cause constipation — this is expected, but tell your doctor if it troubles you. Keep iron-containing products well out of reach of children; an overdose in a small child is a medical emergency. Check the labels of everything you take so you do not double up on the same nutrient. Drink plenty of water while taking any laxative, particularly the fibre-based ones — without it they can make constipation worse. Do not use stimulant laxatives daily over long periods without medical advice; the bowel becomes reliant on them. See a doctor if constipation is new and persistent in an adult over forty, or comes with blood, weight loss or severe pain. Tell your doctor before taking a protein supplement if you have kidney disease — the protein load matters. Drink plenty of water while taking a protein supplement. Check the label for milk or soy if you have an allergy or are lactose intolerant.

Do not take Orty Orange if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a suspected bowel obstruction, or with severe abdominal pain of unknown cause. Not for people with inherited disorders of amino-acid metabolism, or with a known allergy to the protein source.

Interactions with other medicines

Iron, calcium, zinc and magnesium reduce the absorption of thyroid tablets and several antibiotics — separate them by a few hours. Tea and coffee taken with iron reduce how much is absorbed; vitamin C increases it. Laxatives can reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time. No significant medicine interactions are expected for most protein supplements.

How to store Orty Orange

Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Expert advice for Orty Orange

Take it with food unless the pack says otherwise. Have deficiencies confirmed and rechecked by blood test rather than supplementing indefinitely. Increase fibre, fluids and physical activity — these treat the cause rather than the episode. Do not ignore the urge to go; a regular routine helps. Mix it as directed on the pack; a thicker mix is not a stronger one. Use it alongside meals, not instead of them, unless your dietitian has said otherwise.
