A substitute contains the same active ingredient (salt), in the same strength, as Supirocin Ointment. The medicine inside is the same — the brand name, manufacturer and price are what differ.
All medicines sold in India, branded or generic, must meet the quality standards set by the national drug regulator (CDSCO). A lower price does not mean lower quality.
Please confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before switching brands — they will check that the strength and form match your prescription.
Supirocin Ointment contains Mupirocin (2% w/w). It belongs to the Topical antibiotic (protein synthesis inhibitor; isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase inhibitor) class of medicines.
Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase. This prevents incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins, leading to inhibition of bacterial growth and eradication of susceptible organisms.
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer of ointment 2–3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. May be covered with sterile gauze if advised. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and inside the nose unless specifically prescribed.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
If you miss a dose of Supirocin Ointment, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not apply extra to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Supirocin than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Supirocin are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Use only for bacterial skin infections; do not use for fungal/viral infections unless advised. Avoid use on large areas, deep puncture wounds or severe burns unless prescribed. Stop and seek medical advice if severe irritation, allergy (swelling, severe rash) or no improvement within 3–5 days. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Avoid accidental ingestion and avoid contact with eyes.
No significant systemic drug interactions expected with topical use; avoid mixing with other topical products on the same area unless advised (may reduce effect/irritate).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Keep the tube tightly closed, protect from excessive heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Clean and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of Supirocin Ointment. Avoid using excessive amounts. Wash your hands before and after application to prevent the spread of infection. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose, and rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs. Mild irritation, burning, or redness may occur at the application site after use. Consult your doctor if it persists or worsens. Do not cover the treated area with tight bandages unless your doctor advises you to. Use it only for bacterial skin infections and not for fungal infections. Consult your doctor if redness spreads, pus increases, or the infection worsens. Continue use for the full prescribed duration even if the skin appears to improve earlier. Seek medical advice if your condition does not improve within 3–5 days of using Supirocin Ointment.
