A substitute contains the same active ingredient (salt), in the same strength, as Walmet 850 Tablet. The medicine inside is the same — the brand name, manufacturer and price are what differ.
All medicines sold in India, branded or generic, must meet the quality standards set by the national drug regulator (CDSCO). A lower price does not mean lower quality.
Please confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before switching brands — they will check that the strength and form match your prescription.
Walmet 850 Tablet contains Metformin (850mg). It belongs to the Biguanide (insulin sensitizer) class of medicines.
Metformin decreases glucose production by the liver and reduces intestinal absorption of glucose. It also improves insulin sensitivity in muscles and fat, helping the body use insulin more effectively and lowering blood sugar levels.
Tablet (oral). Take exactly as prescribed, usually with or after meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not crush/chew unless advised. Dose is individualized; regular blood sugar monitoring is recommended.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
If you miss a dose of Walmet 850mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Taking more Walmet than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Walmet are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious)—seek urgent care for deep/rapid breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain, unusual sleepiness. Use with caution in kidney disease; dose adjustment/avoidance may be required based on eGFR. Avoid in severe liver disease, severe dehydration, sepsis, hypoxia/heart failure exacerbation. Temporarily stop before/after iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as per doctor advice. Monitor renal function and vitamin B12 periodically. Hypoglycaemia is uncommon when used alone but can occur with other antidiabetics/insulin.
Alcohol (increases lactic acidosis risk), iodinated contrast media, cimetidine, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., topiramate, acetazolamide), diuretics (may worsen renal function/dehydration), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (may increase blood glucose), other antidiabetic drugs/insulin (increased hypoglycaemia risk)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
The chances of weight gain and low blood sugar are lower with this medicine as compared to other diabetes medicines. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) may occur when taken along with other antidiabetic medicines or alcohol, or on delaying/skipping a meal. Carry a sugar source with you for immediate relief. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any deep or rapid breathing, persistent nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, as Walmet 850mg Tablet may cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, which is an excess of lactic acid in the blood. Prolonged use of Walmet 850mg Tablet may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, which may lead to anemia, causing fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, or headache. Notify your doctor if you experience any of these, as you may require supplements. Your doctor will monitor your blood sugar levels and kidney function regularly while you are taking this medication.
