Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood glucose control; used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines along with diet and exercise.
Metformin decreases glucose production in the liver and reduces intestinal absorption of glucose. It also improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin, helping cells use glucose more effectively, thereby lowering blood sugar.
Oral tablet (sustained release). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with the evening meal or as directed. Swallow whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break. Take with food to reduce stomach upset.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
If you miss a dose of Wellformin 850mg Tablet SR, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Taking more Wellformin SR than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Wellformin SR are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious)—seek urgent care for severe weakness, muscle pain, breathing trouble, unusual sleepiness, abdominal discomfort. Use with caution in kidney impairment; dose adjustment/avoidance may be needed and renal function should be monitored. Temporarily stop before/after iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as advised by doctor. Use caution in liver disease, dehydration, severe infection, or hypoxia (e.g., heart failure, respiratory disease). Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency; periodic monitoring may be needed. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Alcohol (increases lactic acidosis risk), iodinated contrast media, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., topiramate, acetazolamide), cimetidine, ranolazine, dolutegravir, diuretics and ACE inhibitors (may affect kidney function), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (may increase glucose), insulin or sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycemia risk when combined)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
The chances of weight gain and low blood sugar are lower with this medicine as compared to other diabetes medicines. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) may occur when taken along with other antidiabetic medicines or alcohol, or on delaying/skipping a meal. Carry a sugar source with you for immediate relief. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any deep or rapid breathing, persistent nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, as Wellformin 850mg Tablet SR may cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, which is an excess of lactic acid in the blood. Prolonged use of Wellformin 850mg Tablet SR may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, which may lead to anemia, causing fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, or headache. Notify your doctor if you experience any of these, as you may require supplements. Your doctor will monitor your blood sugar levels and kidney function regularly while you are taking this medication.
