Atenova 25 contains Atenolol (25mg). It belongs to the Beta-blocker (beta-1 selective) class of medicines.

How Atenova 25 works

Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and the force of contraction and lowers renin release, thereby decreasing blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand.

How to take Atenova 25

Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice; dose may need tapering.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Atenova 25 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a dangerously slow heartbeat, a severe fall in blood pressure, wheezing and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Atenova 25

Most side effects of Atenova are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• dizziness
• cold hands/feet
• low blood pressure
• nausea
• headache
• sleep disturbances

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), asthma/COPD (may cause bronchospasm), peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with conduction disorders (AV block) or bradycardia. Do not stop abruptly due to risk of rebound hypertension/angina. Dose adjustment may be required in renal impairment. Monitor blood pressure and pulse regularly.

Do not take Atenova if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with a very slow heart rate, certain heart block disorders, or uncontrolled heart failure. Generally avoided in severe asthma.

Interactions with other medicines

Calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem),digoxin,antiarrhythmics (amiodarone),clonidine (withdrawal interaction),other antihypertensives/diuretics,NSAIDs (may reduce BP-lowering effect),insulin and oral antidiabetics (mask hypoglycaemia),sympathomimetics (e.g., salbutamol)

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Atenova 25

It may cause dizziness. If this happens to you, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. It can hide symptoms of low blood sugar if you are diabetic. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. Do not stop taking Atenova 25 Tablet suddenly as it can cause your blood pressure to rise suddenly, thereby increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
