Atenova 50 contains Atenolol (50mg). It belongs to the Beta-blocker (cardioselective beta-1 blocker) class of medicines.

How Atenova 50 works

Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate, cardiac contractility and cardiac output, and suppresses renin release, thereby lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand.

How to take Atenova 50

Take orally as advised by the doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice. Dose adjustments may be needed in kidney disease and the elderly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Atenova 50mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a dangerously slow heartbeat, a severe fall in blood pressure, wheezing and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Atenova are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Do not stop abruptly (may worsen angina/trigger heart attack). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (can cause bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), peripheral vascular disease, thyroid disorders, and depression. Contraindicated/avoid in severe bradycardia, heart block (2nd/3rd degree), cardiogenic shock, and uncontrolled heart failure unless directed by a cardiologist. Inform doctor before surgery/anaesthesia. Dose reduction may be required in renal impairment.

Do not take Atenova if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with a very slow heart rate, certain heart block disorders, or uncontrolled heart failure. Generally avoided in severe asthma.

Interactions with other medicines

Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), verapamil/diltiazem (risk of severe bradycardia/heart block), digoxin (bradycardia), clonidine (rebound hypertension if stopped improperly), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycaemia), beta-agonist bronchodilators (reduced effect), amiodarone/antiarrhythmics (conduction disturbances)

Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Atenova 50

It may cause dizziness. If this happens to you, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. It can hide symptoms of low blood sugar if you are diabetic. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. Do not stop taking Atenova 50mg Tablet suddenly as it can cause your blood pressure to rise suddenly, thereby increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
