Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Glimital M2 Tablet contains Glimepiride 2 mg + Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg (modified/extended release). It belongs to the Sulfonylurea + Biguanide (combination) class of medicines.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (adult) to improve blood glucose control along with diet and exercise when dual therapy is needed.
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that increases insulin release from pancreatic beta cells and improves insulin sensitivity. Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and improves peripheral glucose uptake, lowering fasting and post-meal blood sugar.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with or immediately after food (preferably with breakfast) to reduce stomach upset and hypoglycaemia risk. Swallow whole if modified/extended release; do not crush or chew. Monitor blood glucose regularly.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Glimital M2 as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Glimital M2 than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Glimital M2 are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Risk of hypoglycaemia (higher with missed meals, alcohol, strenuous exercise, elderly, kidney/liver impairment). Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk increases with significant kidney disease, dehydration, severe infection, heart/respiratory failure, shock, and excessive alcohol intake. Check renal function before starting and periodically; stop temporarily before/after iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as advised. Use caution in hepatic impairment. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Seek care for symptoms of low sugar or lactic acidosis (extreme weakness, fast breathing, abdominal discomfort).
Alcohol, insulin/other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (raise glucose), ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia risk), fluoroquinolones (dysglycaemia), rifampicin (reduces sulfonylurea effect), azole antifungals and macrolides (may increase sulfonylurea levels), iodinated contrast media (lactic acidosis risk with metformin), cimetidine (increases metformin levels)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
Medicines with the same active ingredient (Glimepiride 2 mg + Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg (modified/extended release)). Ask your doctor or pharmacist before switching brands.
