Composition of Hytrin 5 mg

Hytrin 5 mg contains Terazosin (5mg). It belongs to the Alpha-1 adrenergic blocker class of medicines.

Uses of Hytrin 5 mg

• Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms such as weak urine stream
• hesitancy and incomplete emptying; treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure)

How Hytrin 5 mg works

Terazosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker. It relaxes smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck to improve urine flow in BPH, and also relaxes blood vessels to lower blood pressure.

How to take Hytrin 5 mg

Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at bedtime to reduce dizziness/first-dose fainting. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Hytrin 5 Tablet, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can seriously disturb the heart's rhythm and blood pressure. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Hytrin 5 mg

Most side effects of Hytrin are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Dizziness
• lightheadedness
• headache
• weakness/fatigue
• drowsiness
• postural (orthostatic) hypotension
• palpitations
• nasal congestion
• swelling of legs/ankles (edema)
• nausea

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

May cause marked drop in blood pressure after the first dose or dose increases (risk of fainting); take first dose at bedtime and rise slowly from sitting/lying. Use caution when driving/operating machines until effects known. Inform doctor if you have low blood pressure, heart disease, history of syncope, liver impairment, or are planning cataract surgery (risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome). Seek urgent help for prolonged painful erection (priapism) or severe dizziness/fainting.

Do not take Hytrin if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Your doctor will check that this is suitable for your particular heart condition.

Interactions with other medicines

PDE-5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) and other antihypertensives may increase risk of low blood pressure; other alpha-blockers (tamsulosin, prazosin, doxazosin) additive hypotension; alcohol may worsen dizziness; strong CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase levels (use caution).

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Hytrin 5 mg

Hytrin 5 Tablet may cause a sudden drop in your blood pressure, especially when you first start taking this medicine. To reduce the risk of dizziness or fainting, stand up slowly after sitting or lying down. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Hytrin 5 Tablet, as it can lower your blood pressure even more and make you feel more dizzy. Be cautious while driving or doing anything that requires concentration, as it can cause dizziness and sleepiness. Inform your doctor that you are taking Hytrin 5 Tablet if you are scheduled for a cataract surgery.
