Zincofer Tablet is used for treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, anemia due to pregnancy/lactation, nutritional iron/folate/zinc deficiency, support during periods of increased iron requirement (e.g., adolescence, chronic blood loss).
Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated September 2026
Zincofer Tablet contains Ferrous ascorbate + Folic acid + Zinc (strengths vary by label). It belongs to the Iron preparation with folate and zinc supplement class of medicines.
Ferrous ascorbate replenishes iron stores needed to form hemoglobin and improve oxygen-carrying capacity of blood; ascorbate enhances iron absorption. Folic acid supports DNA synthesis and red blood cell maturation. Zinc supports hematopoiesis and immune function and helps correct zinc deficiency.
Tablet to be taken as advised by a doctor, usually once daily. Preferably take after food to reduce stomach upset; take with water and avoid taking along with tea/coffee/milk, antacids or calcium supplements close to the dose. Do not crush/chew unless directed.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.
An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting and stomach pain, and with iron can be dangerous, especially in children. It is unlikely to cause serious harm, because the body passes surplus B vitamins out in the urine. It can cause vomiting, stomach pain and, with some minerals, damage over the longer term. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Most side effects of Zincofer are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Generally safe (commonly used in pregnancy) / Consult doctor |
|---|---|
| Breastfeeding | Consult your doctor before using this while breastfeeding. |
| Alcohol | Use with caution (alcohol may worsen gastric irritation and affect anemia) |
| Driving | Not expected to affect your ability to drive. |
| Kidney | Use with caution if you have kidney disease — your doctor may adjust the dose or monitor your kidney function. |
| Liver | Use with caution if you have liver disease — your doctor may adjust the dose or monitor your liver function. |
| Habit forming | No |
Do not use in iron overload states (e.g., hemochromatosis/hemosiderosis) or non–iron deficiency anemia unless advised. Keep out of reach of children (iron overdose can be fatal). Use with caution in peptic ulcer/IBD; may cause constipation and dark stools. If severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rash or breathing difficulty occurs, seek medical help. Separate from interacting medicines to avoid reduced absorption.
Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack.
Antacids, calcium supplements, dairy products, tea/coffee (reduced iron absorption), tetracyclines (e.g., doxycycline), quinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin), levothyroxine, bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate), penicillamine, methyldopa—separate dosing by 2-4 hours as advised.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep container tightly closed.
Take it with food unless the pack says otherwise. Have deficiencies confirmed and rechecked by blood test rather than supplementing indefinitely. A supplement corrects a deficiency; it is not a general energy tonic. If you are on it for nerve symptoms, keep your review appointment so the underlying cause is looked for. Take it with food to reduce nausea. A varied diet remains the best source of these nutrients.
