Tonoferon Drops contains Folic Acid (200u/ml) + Iron (25mg) + Lysine (200u/1g) + Vitamin B12 (5u/1g). It belongs to the Iron preparation (haematinic) class of medicines.

How Tonoferon Drops works

How to take Tonoferon Drops

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose of Tonoferon Drop, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

An overdose of this medicine is unlikely to cause serious harm, because the body passes surplus B vitamins out in the urine. It can cause vomiting and stomach pain, and with iron can be dangerous, especially in children. It may cause stomach upset and, with prolonged excess, puts avoidable load on the kidneys. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Warnings and precautions

Use only if prescribed for infants/children; overdose of iron can be dangerous—keep out of reach of children. Use with caution in patients with iron overload (hemochromatosis/hemosiderosis), hemolytic anemia, repeated blood transfusions, active peptic ulcer/IBD. Liquid iron may stain teeth—give towards back of mouth and rinse mouth after. Seek medical help for accidental overdose or severe vomiting, abdominal pain, or blood in stools.

Do not take Tonoferon if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with inherited disorders of amino-acid metabolism, or with a known allergy to the protein source.

Interactions with other medicines

Reduced absorption with antacids, calcium, dairy products; reduced absorption with tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones (separate by 2-4 hours); may reduce absorption of levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, penicillamine, methyldopa/levodopa (separate dosing).

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), tightly closed, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
