Acetylcysteine replenishes glutathione and helps neutralize free radicals, providing antioxidant protection. If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. It can cause vomiting, stomach pain and, with some minerals, damage over the longer term. It is unlikely to cause serious harm, because the body passes surplus B vitamins out in the urine. It in very large doses taken over months can itself damage nerves, causing numbness and unsteadiness. It can cause vomiting and stomach pain, and with iron can be dangerous, especially in children. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Anticoagulants/antiplatelets (e.g., warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) may have increased bleeding risk with vitamin E; tetracyclines/quinolones/penicillamine/bisphosphonates—zinc and other minerals can reduce absorption (separate by 2–4 hours); levothyroxine—minerals may reduce absorption (separate by 4 hours); iron/calcium supplements—may compete with zinc/copper absorption; alcohol and smoking can reduce antioxidant vitamin levels.

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Drink plenty of water — it thins mucus better than any syrup. Steam inhalation helps congestion and costs nothing. Measure the dose with the cup supplied. Take it with food to reduce nausea. A varied diet remains the best source of these nutrients. A supplement corrects a deficiency; it is not a general energy tonic. If you are on it for nerve symptoms, keep your review appointment so the underlying cause is looked for. Take it with food unless the pack says otherwise. Have deficiencies confirmed and rechecked by blood test rather than supplementing indefinitely.
