Betaloc 25 Tablet contains Metoprolol Tartrate (25mg). It belongs to the Selective Beta-1 adrenergic blocker (Beta-blocker) class of medicines.

How Betaloc 25 Tablet works

Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 blocker that reduces the effect of adrenaline on the heart. It slows heart rate and decreases the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure and reducing the heart’s oxygen demand.

How to take Betaloc 25 Tablet

Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily for prolonged-release tablets. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. Can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of betalOC 25mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause a dangerously slow heartbeat, a severe fall in blood pressure, wheezing and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Betaloc 25 Tablet

Most side effects of Betaloc are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• slow heart rate (bradycardia)
• low blood pressure
• cold hands/feet
• headache
• nausea
• sleep disturbances

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound angina/raised BP). Use with caution in asthma/COPD, diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, low heart rate, heart block, severe hypotension, and severe heart failure unless supervised. Monitor pulse and BP regularly. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected.

Do not take Betaloc if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with a very slow heart rate, certain heart block disorders, or uncontrolled heart failure. Generally avoided in severe asthma.

Interactions with other medicines

Verapamil, diltiazem, digoxin, amiodarone and other antiarrhythmics (risk of bradycardia/heart block), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), clonidine (withdrawal interaction), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masks hypoglycaemia), NSAIDs (may reduce BP control), CYP2D6 inhibitors like fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels)

Store below 25°C, in original pack, protected from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Betaloc 25 Tablet

betalOC 25mg Tablet may cause dizziness. If this happens to you, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. It can hide symptoms of low blood sugar if you are diabetic. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. Do not stop taking betalOC 25mg Tablet suddenly, as it can cause your blood pressure to rise suddenly, thereby increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Monitor blood pressure and heart rate regularly to ensure the medication is working effectively.
